Kolkata Polo Club lays claim to being the oldest polo club in the world, tracing its founding to 1862 when British cavalry officers and Indian aristocrats established organised polo competition on the Maidan — the vast open parkland at the heart of colonial Calcutta. If this dating is accepted, it predates all other formal polo clubs by several years and places Kolkata at the very origin of organised polo as a codified competitive sport. The club's Maidan ground, within sight of the Victoria Memorial and the racecourse, provides a polo experience steeped in history unique in the world. The club continues to operate and host polo competitions during the Indian winter season, maintaining a tradition that stretches back over 160 years to the British imperial period when Calcutta was one of the great cities of the empire.
