Biography
Enrique González holds a unique place in polo history as the professional who more than any other individual shaped the development of polo in China during its critical formative period. An Argentine professional of considerable skill, González arrived in China at a moment when the country's economic boom was creating new demand for equestrian sports among its emerging elite. As head coach of the Chinese national polo team during a pivotal era, González implemented structured training methodologies that transformed a collection of enthusiastic but inexperienced Chinese players into a competitive national squad capable of competing in FIP Asia Zone tournaments. His coaching philosophy emphasised the fundamentals of horsemanship alongside tactical polo education. González's involvement with the Tang Polo Club in Beijing — one of China's most ambitious polo projects — gave him a platform to work with the country's best Chinese players while also developing the horse breeding and management practices that any serious polo operation requires. The Tang Club's reputation as a world-class facility owes much to his professional input. His legacy in China is measured not only in tournament results but in the hundreds of Chinese players who learned the game under his guidance or through the programmes he established. González helped create the infrastructure — coaches, horses, facilities, and competition pathways — that allowed Chinese polo to develop from novelty to genuine sporting endeavour.
