John "Memo" Gracida is widely regarded as the greatest polo player Mexico has ever produced and one of the five finest players of the twentieth century. Born in 1956 in Mexico City into a family with deep equestrian roots, Gracida became the dominant force in world polo across the 1980s and 1990s, achieving a 10-goal handicap rating simultaneously from both the United States Polo Association and the Argentine Polo Association — a distinction shared by only a handful of players in history. His instinctive horsemanship, tactical intelligence, and extraordinary ball-striking ability set him apart in any era. Gracida's career centred on the elite American and Argentine circuits, where he was the anchor of legendary teams including Retama, White Birch, and Revlon.
