    Biography

John "Memo" Gracida is widely regarded as the greatest polo player Mexico has ever produced and one of the five finest players of the twentieth century. Born in 1956 in Mexico City into a family with deep equestrian roots, Gracida became the dominant force in world polo across the 1980s and 1990s, achieving a 10-goal handicap rating simultaneously from both the United States Polo Association and the Argentine Polo Association — a distinction shared by only a handful of players in history. His instinctive horsemanship, tactical intelligence, and extraordinary ball-striking ability set him apart in any era. Gracida's career centred on the elite American and Argentine circuits, where he was the anchor of legendary teams including Retama, White Birch, and Revlon. He won the US Open Polo Championship an extraordinary number of times and was a fixture in high-goal competition at Palm Beach, Meadow Brook, and the Santa Barbara polo grounds. His partnership with his brother Carlos Gracida formed one of the most feared combinations in polo history, and together they elevated Mexican polo to global prominence. On the Argentine circuit, Gracida competed in multiple Argentine Open campaigns, matching the continent's most celebrated players on their home ground. He was revered equally by his peers in Buenos Aires and Palm Beach — a rare cross-continental authority that speaks to the universality of his talent. His playing style combined physical aggression with exceptional finesse, and his ability to read a game and anticipate play made him almost impossible to mark. Beyond his competitive record, Memo Gracida served as an ambassador for the sport across North America, inspiring a generation of Mexican and American players. He remains the benchmark against which Mexican polo professionals are measured, and his legacy endures in the programmes and academies that have sought to develop talent in his image. He was inducted into the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame, cementing his place among the immortals of the game.
