Biography
John Williams is one of the founding fathers of modern polo in Barbados, most closely associated with the establishment and development of Apes Hill Polo Club — one of the most spectacular polo venues in the entire Caribbean. Set in the highlands of Saint James parish at over 1,000 feet above sea level, Apes Hill offers dramatic views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and the polo club Williams helped create there became a landmark achievement in Caribbean polo infrastructure. As the driving force behind the Apes Hill development, Williams combined a personal passion for polo with the entrepreneurial vision to create a world-class facility on an island that had a polo tradition dating back to the colonial era but had lacked a dedicated high-quality venue. The club he helped establish attracted visiting international players, hosted Caribbean polo fixtures, and brought a new level of sophistication to Barbadian polo. Williams's contribution went beyond simply building a polo field — he created a polo community in Barbados where one had not previously existed in an organised form, and he invested personally in the horses, facilities, and social infrastructure needed to make the club function at an international standard. His work at Apes Hill made Barbados a genuine polo destination and put the island on the map for international polo travellers.
