    Biography

Tommy Hitchcock Jr stands at the very apex of American polo's golden age, a 10-goal player of such surpassing excellence and broader cultural significance that his fame extended well beyond the polo world into the highest levels of American society, literature, and wartime heroism. F. Scott Fitzgerald, who knew Hitchcock, drew on his patrician charisma and athletic brilliance when creating the character of Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby — though Hitchcock's character was far nobler than his fictional counterpart. Born in 1900 into a Long Island polo family, Hitchcock was playing polo with exceptional ability before most of his contemporaries had mastered the basics. By his early twenties he was acknowledged as the finest polo player in the United States — and by many in Argentina and Britain as the finest in the world. His 10-goal handicap during the 1920s and 1930s was maintained across multiple seasons of the most demanding international competition available. His international confrontations with Argentine polo at the height of its early-twentieth-century dominance were defining moments in polo's global story, with Hitchcock representing American ambitions against the South American juggernaut with skill, determination, and grace. His performances in international test matches elevated polo in the public consciousness on both sides of the Atlantic. Hitchcock was killed in 1944 when his P-51 Mustang crashed in France during a test flight — a loss mourned by the polo world and by a nation for whom he had become a symbol of excellence, courage, and the best of the American ideal. His legacy as the defining figure of American polo's first great era remains secure and deeply honoured.
