New FIP Safety Standards
The Federation of International Polo (FIP) has announced comprehensive updates to its safety regulations, effective from the 2026 season.
Key Changes
Helmet Standards: All players must now wear helmets meeting the updated NOCSAE or PAS015:2011 standards. Older helmets will no longer be permitted in FIP-sanctioned events.
Concussion Protocol: A new mandatory concussion assessment protocol requires players to undergo a baseline cognitive test at the start of each season. Any player showing signs of concussion during play must complete a graduated return-to-play protocol.
Horse Welfare: New minimum rest periods between chukkas and mandatory veterinary checks have been introduced.
Industry Response
The changes have been broadly welcomed by the polo community, though some players have expressed concerns about the cost of upgrading equipment.
Timeline
All national associations affiliated with FIP are expected to implement these rules by March 2026.
