    Polo Fundamentals

Master the grip, the four basic swings, and proper body position — the foundation of every polo player's game.

    The Correct Grip

Your grip is the foundation of every shot. Get this right, and everything else becomes easier.

    1

Hold the mallet at the very end of the handle (not in the middle)

    2

Wrap your fingers around with thumb pointing down the shaft

    3

Your hand should form a "V" shape on top of the handle

    4

Keep a firm but relaxed grip - too tight limits swing power

    5

The sling goes around your thumb for safety

    The Four Basic Swings

Every polo shot is a variation of these four fundamental swings. Master these before moving to advanced techniques.

    Nearside Forehand

    Beginner

The most common shot. Ball is on your left side (for right-handed players), and you swing forward.

    Proper Body Position

    Eyes

Always on the ball - never look at your mallet

    Shoulders

Rotate fully on each swing for maximum power

    Hips

Stay centered in the saddle, don't lean too far

    Legs

Firm in stirrups, heels down for stability

    Arms

Extended but relaxed, swing from shoulder

    Advanced Shots (Coming Next)

Once you've mastered the basics, you'll learn these more challenging techniques:

    Neck Shot

Hit under the horse's neck to the opposite side. Used for quick changes of direction.

    Tail Shot

Hit behind the horse. Useful when the ball runs past you.

    Cut Shot

Slice across the ball to change its direction without full power.

    Push

Gentle tap to control ball position rather than send it long.
