Polo Pony Hire & Lease Costs
What it costs to hire or lease polo ponies — per chukka, per match, and per season. Includes seasonal leasing rates across major polo regions and key contract terms to review.
These costs are approximate and vary by pony quality, region, season, and individual agreement. All figures are presented in USD for comparison purposes. Always negotiate and confirm actual costs directly with the horse owner or club. Consult independent legal advice for any formal lease agreement.
Hire & Lease Formats
Polo ponies can be accessed in several different ways, from a single chukka to a full season. Each format suits different levels of commitment and budget.
| Format | Approx. Cost (USD) | Notes | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per Chukka (Practice) | $50 – $120 | Pay-per-chukka rates for practice sessions at clubs that offer hire ponies. Ideal for players who travel and need mounts at a new club. | Occasional players, travellers |
| Per Chukka (Tournament) | $120 – $300 | Tournament-grade hire ponies cost considerably more — they are faster, better schooled, and in peak condition. Rates vary hugely by pony quality. | Tournament players without own ponies |
| Per Match (Full Set) | $400 – $1,500 | Hiring a string of ponies for a full match (typically 2–4 ponies needed per player). This is the typical arrangement for club-level tournament play. | Club tournament players |
| Monthly Lease | $800 – $3,000 per pony | Short-term lease of one or more ponies for a defined period. Typically includes basic livery. The lessee is responsible for veterinary costs unless otherwise agreed. | Players visiting for a season segment |
| Full Season Lease | $5,000 – $25,000+ per pony | Season-long lease of a polo pony. Common arrangement for medium-goal players who cannot or do not wish to own ponies. All-in costs depend heavily on the pony's rating and the lease agreement terms. | Regular season players, medium-goal level |
Hire Costs by Region
Polo pony hire costs vary significantly by location. The following table provides approximate benchmarks — actual costs depend on pony quality and availability.
| Region | Per Chukka (USD) | Full Season Lease (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Argentina | $30 – $80 | $4,000 – $15,000/pony | Most affordable globally. Large supply of polo ponies and professional handlers keeps costs down significantly. |
| UK (England) | $80 – $200 | $8,000 – $25,000/pony | Season lease costs are high due to horse transport, quality of animals, and limited supply. London Polo Club and Guards polo carry premium rates. |
| USA (Florida/Wellington) | $100 – $250 | $8,000 – $30,000/pony | Wellington during January–April season is the most competitive polo market in the world. Exceptional ponies available at top prices. |
| Spain (Sotogrande) | $80 – $180 | $6,000 – $20,000/pony | Southern Spain offers competitive rates by western European standards. Season runs July–August primarily. |
| Australia | $60 – $150 | $5,000 – $18,000/pony | Growing polo scene with competitive pricing relative to quality. Season November–March. |
| India | $40 – $100 | $2,000 – $8,000/pony | Excellent value at established Rajasthan and Delhi clubs. Quality of polo ponies has improved significantly over the past decade. |
Key Lease Contract Terms to Review
A polo pony lease is a significant financial and legal commitment. Always obtain a written agreement and consider independent legal review for season-length arrangements.
World Polo Guide strongly recommends obtaining independent legal review of any polo pony lease contract before signing.
Livery included?
Some leases include stable, feed, and basic care. Others are "bare" leases where you arrange and pay for livery separately.
Veterinary responsibility
Clearly establish who pays for vet fees. Routine care is usually the lessor's responsibility; treatment of injuries during play may fall to the lessee.
Insurance requirement
Lessors typically require lessees to carry third-party and/or mortality insurance during the lease period. Verify what is required.
Farrier / shoeing
Who arranges and pays for regular shoeing? This recurring cost needs to be accounted for in your budget.
Return condition
Understand the expected condition at return. Ponies should be returned at the same weight and fitness level as received, barring reasonable wear.
Injury/death liability
What happens if the pony is injured or dies during the lease? This must be explicitly covered in the agreement. Never lease without a written contract.
Playing restrictions
Some lessors restrict which tournaments or polo grounds the pony can be played at. Confirm this upfront.
