How to Play Polo
From your first lesson to tournament play — master the basics, learn proper technique, and develop into a confident polo player.
Step-by-Step Beginner Tutorials
Hold the Mallet Correctly
Grip at the end of the handle, thumb pointing down the shaft. Your hand should form a "V" shape on top.
Understand the Basic Swings
Master the four fundamental shots: nearside forehand, nearside backhand, offside forehand, and offside backhand.
Learn Advanced Shots
Progress to neck shots (under the horse's neck), tail shots (behind the horse), and cut shots for ball control.
Your First Lesson Expectations
Expect wooden horse practice, basic riding, and slow mallet work. Most clubs provide all equipment for beginners.
Advanced Tactics & Strategy
Ride-Off Technique
Push opponents off the line of the ball using controlled shoulder-to-shoulder contact with your horse.
Hooking
Block an opponent's mallet during their backswing—only legal from the same side as the ball.
Team Positioning
Positions 1-4 have distinct roles: #1 scores, #2 supports attack, #3 is the pivot/playmaker, #4 defends the goal.
Reading the Play
Anticipate where the ball will go based on player positions and right-of-way rules.
