Isa Funtua was one of Nigeria's most powerful polo patrons and one of the greatest benefactors the sport has ever had in West Africa. A banking and business elite from Katsina State, Funtua was a legendary figure at the Fifth Chukker Polo Club in Kaduna — Africa's premier polo resort — where his financial support helped build the world-class facility that attracts international teams today. As a close associate of Nigerian polo's top brass, Funtua wielded immense influence that translated into government support for polo events across Nigeria. The Kano Polo Club also benefited from his patronage, cementing northern Nigeria's status as the heartland of African polo.
