Biography
Martin Mahony is Kenya's most decorated polo player and the long-serving chairman of the Kenya Polo Association, a figure whose career has spanned over two decades of competitive polo across East Africa and whose leadership has shaped the modern structure of Kenyan polo. Based in Nairobi, Mahony has competed at the Karen Polo Club and across the East African circuit, including tournaments in Uganda, Tanzania, and on the coastal circuits in Mombasa. Kenya's polo tradition is one of Africa's most enduring, rooted in the colonial-era equestrian culture of the Rift Valley and the White Highlands, where British settlers established polo grounds in the early twentieth century. Mahony represents a continuity of this tradition while simultaneously pushing Kenyan polo toward greater African integration and international engagement. As Kenya Polo Association chairman, Mahony has been a key figure at FIP Africa regional meetings, advocating for African polo's representation within the global federation and working to raise Kenya's competitive profile beyond its traditional East African boundaries. He has supported the development of junior polo programmes in Nairobi and the Rift Valley, recognising that Kenya's polo future depends on broadening participation beyond the traditional equestrian elite. His playing career has taken him to South Africa for the high-goal season, to the UAE during winter, and to the United Kingdom for summer competitions. He is widely respected both as a competitor and as an administrator, and is considered the central pillar of Kenyan polo's governance and international credibility.
