Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz 2026: UAE Claim Historic First Title

St. Moritz's iconic frozen lake witnessed a historic upset at the 40th annual Snow Polo World Cup as the UAE national team claimed their first ever title, defeating the home nation Switzerland 8-6 in a final played under perfect alpine conditions.\n\nThe three-day tournament, held on the natural ice rink of Lake St. Moritz at 1,800 metres altitude, drew a capacity crowd of 6,000 spectators for the final — a mix of the Engadin valley's winter residents and international polo followers who make the annual pilgrimage to what is arguably the world's most glamorous polo venue.\n\nThe UAE's victory was built on a remarkable defensive structure in the first two chukkas, limiting Switzerland's high-tempo counter-attacking game that had won them the previous two editions. UAE's Hugo Larrea — an Argentine-born 8-goaler playing under his Emirati adoption — proved unplayable in the middle chukkas, scoring four of the team's eight goals.\n\nSwitzerland's Tomas Riechers, playing on his home lake for the eighth consecutive year, showed flashes of brilliance but was unable to break down the UAE's organised rearguard. England placed third after defeating Argentina in the bronze match 7-5 earlier in the afternoon.\n\nConditions this year were exceptional by recent standards. The lake froze to an unusual 28cm depth following January's sustained cold snap across the Alps, providing the firmest playing surface in several years. The tournament organiser, Pilatus Arena Events, confirmed that 2026 saw the highest broadcast reach in the event's history, with coverage distributed to 67 countries.\n\nThe next edition of the Snow Polo World Cup is already confirmed for January 2027, with ticket pre-registration opening on the official St. Moritz polo website from March 2026.
