Polo Insurance Guide
Horse mortality, major medical, player personal accident, and club liability — everything polo players and owners need to know about insuring their participation in the sport.
Types of Polo Insurance
Polo insurance falls into several distinct categories. Most active players and horse owners need at least three of these — understand what each covers before choosing your policies.
Horse Mortality Insurance
Covers the death of a polo pony from accident, illness, or disease. Pays out the agreed insured value of the horse.
Who needs it: Anyone who owns one or more polo ponies. Essential for high-value mounts.
Typical cost: 3–5% of horse value per year
A $50,000 pony would cost $1,500–$2,500/year to insure for mortality.
Major Medical / Surgical Cover
Covers veterinary fees for illness, injury, and surgery above a deductible. Does not pay out on death — that is separate mortality cover.
Who needs it: All polo pony owners. Vet bills at competition level can reach $10,000–$30,000+ per incident.
Typical cost: $5,000–$15,000 vet fee limit per year
Covers colic surgery, fracture repair, and major lameness treatment.
Player Personal Accident Insurance
Provides compensation for the player in the event of accident, injury, permanent disability, or death resulting from polo activity.
Who needs it: All polo players, particularly those not covered by employer income protection schemes.
Typical cost: $10–$50/month depending on coverage level and country
Covers hospitalisation, income loss, and rehabilitation costs following a polo injury.
Public Liability Insurance
Covers claims made by third parties who are injured or whose property is damaged as a result of polo activity involving the insured.
Who needs it: Players, grooms, and horse owners. Required by most clubs for participation.
Typical cost: Often included in club membership; standalone from $100/year
Covers a spectator injured by a stray mallet or a car damaged by a loose horse.
Club & Venue Liability
General liability cover for polo clubs and event organisers, covering third-party injury claims and property damage arising from club operations.
Who needs it: All polo clubs, tournament organisers, and match hosts.
Typical cost: $1M–$5M cover; premiums from $2,000–$15,000/year depending on size
Covers spectator injuries, ground damage claims, and event cancellation disputes.
Transit Insurance
Covers horses during transportation by road, air, or sea. Separate from standard mortality cover which typically requires horses to be at a stable or venue.
Who needs it: Players who travel internationally with horses or transport horses regularly between venues.
Typical cost: Typically 0.5–1% of horse value per journey or annual rate available
Covers a pony injured in a horse trailer accident or during flight from UK to Argentina.

When to Buy Each Type
Timing matters in polo insurance. Here is when to act to ensure you are never left without cover.
Before You Buy a Horse
Get horse mortality quotes before completing the purchase. Some policies require veterinary inspection certificates before cover begins.
When Joining a New Club
Check what the club membership covers (typically public liability only) and identify gaps in your personal protection.
Before Travelling Internationally
Ensure transit cover is in place before shipping horses overseas. Your standard mortality policy may not cover transit.
At Start of Each Season
Review and renew policies. Update insured values if horse values have changed. Ensure medical cover limits are adequate for current vet costs.
When Organising a Tournament
Event organisers need specific event liability cover in addition to standard club cover. Obtain this well before the event date.
When Taking on Grooms or Staff
Employer's liability insurance is legally required in most countries when you employ staff to care for horses.
Important: Insurance is not retroactive. Once an incident has occurred, you cannot apply for cover to be backdated. Ensure all policies are active before each playing session, event, or journey with horses.
