The Nigerian Polo Championship is the premier polo tournament in West Africa and one of the continent's oldest continuously staged polo events, with roots extending back to the colonial era when British administrators and military officers established polo on the Jos Plateau and in the northern cities of Kano, Kaduna, and Zaria. Nigeria has one of Africa's richest polo traditions, sustained by the country's northern equestrian culture and the patronage of the business and political elite who have maintained the sport through decades of economic and social change. The championship draws teams from across Nigeria's domestic circuit — Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Abuja, and Lagos — and the competitive standard reflects a country with genuinely deep polo roots.
