Getting to Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) handles a modest number of domestic routes from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Denver, and Seattle. The more practical option for international visitors is Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), approximately 90 miles to the south — a 90-minute drive in light traffic, though I-101 congestion can extend this considerably. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner connects Los Angeles to Santa Barbara in roughly two hours and offers a scenic alternative to driving. Once in Santa Barbara, a car is recommended for reaching the polo club, which lies a few miles east of the city centre toward Carpinteria.
Accommodation
Santa Barbara has a well-developed hotel and inn scene, ranging from historic boutique properties in the downtown area to beachfront resorts along the waterfront. The Carpinteria area — closest to the polo club — has a range of smaller motels and holiday rentals. Given the area's popularity as a leisure destination, rooms fill quickly during summer weekends; booking several months in advance is advisable for polo season visits.
Weather During Season
Santa Barbara enjoys a Mediterranean climate year-round. Polo season months (April through October) bring warm, sunny days with low humidity and cool ocean breezes in the afternoon. Daytime highs typically range from 18–28°C (65–82°F). June can occasionally bring a marine layer ("June Gloom") in the mornings that burns off by late morning. Evenings are reliably cool.
Local Tips
The club hosts public-facing Sunday matches throughout the season, and the atmosphere is notably relaxed and welcoming. The surrounding Santa Ynez wine country — a short drive into the valley — offers an excellent complement to a polo weekend. Carpinteria State Beach is within walking distance of the club grounds.
