Polo in Texas: An Overview

Polo arrived in Texas in the late nineteenth century, carried by ranchers and cavalry officers who recognised the sport's natural affinity with equestrian culture already prevalent in the state. Today, the Houston Polo Club is one of the most active clubs in the southern United States, offering regular chukkas, a busy lesson programme, and an annual tournament schedule that includes events drawing out-of-state competitors. The Dallas Polo Club provides a similar community-oriented environment in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, catering to both competitive players and social members. Texas falls within the USPA Southwestern Circuit, which covers clubs across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. The circuit's tournament schedule runs primarily from March through June, and again in September and October — avoiding the most intense summer heat. The state's ranching heritage means that horse availability and horsemanship expertise are relatively strong, which can make the transition to polo somewhat more natural for those already comfortable in the saddle. Lesson programmes at both the Houston and Dallas clubs are open to complete beginners.
