Polo in Virginia: An Overview

Virginia's polo scene is deeply embedded in the wider equestrian community of the state, which also encompasses fox hunting, steeplechasing, and show jumping. The Piedmont region — particularly the areas around Charlottesville, Warrenton, and Middleburg — supports multiple clubs and a year-round community of horse owners for whom polo is often one of several equestrian pursuits. The Virginia Polo Center, located near Charlottesville, has served as an important venue for both competitive play and instruction. The University of Virginia hosts one of the more competitive intercollegiate polo programmes in the eastern United States, and several other Virginia and neighbouring institutions field teams that compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association polo division. Virginia falls within the USPA Mid-Atlantic Circuit, which includes clubs from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey as well as Virginia itself. The circuit's spring and summer seasons align well with Virginia's temperate climate, which allows grass polo from approximately April through October. The state's proximity to Washington D.C. also draws diplomats, government officials, and an international crowd to polo matches, particularly during the summer months.
