Qualifications & Skills
Polo grooming is accessible without formal qualifications. Practical experience and horsemanship ability are the primary requirements.
Formal qualification required?
No — entry to polo grooming does not require a formal qualification. Practical experience and demonstrable horsemanship are what employers look for.
Riding ability
Riding ability is highly valued and often required for exercise riding duties. Confident, balanced riding at trot and canter is the minimum. Polo-experienced riders are preferred.
Horse husbandry knowledge
Understanding of feeding, health monitoring, wound care, and stable management is essential. This can be learned on the job but prior equestrian experience accelerates progress.
Tack and equipment knowledge
Ability to correctly fit and clean polo tack — saddles, bridles, polo bandages, martingales — is required. Specific polo tack knowledge can be learned quickly with experience.
Driving licence
Often required for travelling groom roles. Ability to tow a horse trailer is a significant advantage.
Language
Spanish is a significant advantage in polo grooming — Argentine professionals dominate the sport and communication in Spanish is common at yards operating at competitive level.
