    Key Responsibilities

The polo stable manager is responsible for the overall welfare and operational readiness of the polo string and the efficient running of the yard.

    Horse welfare and health monitoring

Overseeing daily health checks, working with veterinarians, coordinating vaccination and worming programmes, and escalating health concerns promptly.

    Yard management and staff supervision

Managing grooms and yard staff — scheduling, training, performance management, and ensuring consistent daily routines are followed.

    Feed and nutrition management

Planning feeding programmes appropriate to the horses' workload, liaising with equine nutritionists as needed, managing feed stock and procurement.

    Farriery coordination

Scheduling regular farrier visits, monitoring foot health, and ensuring all horses are appropriately shod for their workload and ground conditions.

    Tack and equipment management

Maintaining an inventory of polo tack and equipment, ensuring safe condition, organising repairs, and overseeing procurement.

    Tournament logistics

Planning horse transport and logistics for tournaments, coordinating with venue yards, and ensuring ponies arrive in optimal condition.

    Budget management

Managing the operating budget for the yard — feed, bedding, vet, farrier, and supplies. Reporting to the owner or club management.

    Record keeping

Maintaining accurate records for all horses — health history, vaccination, farriery, and any incidents or injuries.

    Approximate Salary Ranges

These figures are approximate. Actual pay depends on yard size, employer, location, and whether accommodation is included.

    Yard Manager (smaller club/private yard)

    $35,000 – $55,000

Typically managing 10–20 horses with a small team of grooms. May include accommodation.

    Stable Manager (established club)

    $45,000 – $75,000

Managing larger string of horses at an established polo club with full groom team. Often includes accommodation and vehicle.

    Head Stud Manager (breeding/high-goal operation)

    $60,000 – $100,000+

Senior management role at a large polo operation. May include a breeding programme. Significant responsibility.

    Qualifications & Experience

Polo stable manager positions require a combination of horse expertise and operational management skills. Most experienced candidates progress from senior groom roles.

    Equestrian management qualification

Formal qualifications (such as BHS Stage examinations, Equine Science degree, or equivalent national qualifications) are advantageous but not always required. Demonstrated practical experience often outweighs paper qualifications.

    Polo-specific experience

Understanding of polo operations — the seasonal structure, tournament demands, polo-specific tack and equipment, and working with high-performance horses — is essential. At least 3–5 years in polo yards is typically expected.

    People management

Stable managers lead teams of grooms. Ability to manage, train, and motivate yard staff is as important as horse skills. Previous supervisory experience is valued.

    Veterinary liaison

Comfort working alongside veterinarians, following treatment protocols, and understanding when to escalate concerns. Not a vet — but the stable manager is the first point of contact for daily horse health monitoring.

    Financial literacy

Budget management responsibility means basic financial skills — cost tracking, procurement management, and budget reporting — are expected at this level.
