    The Petisero Role

The petisero is central to Argentine polo culture. Understanding this role contextualises the Argentine tradition that dominates world polo operations.

    Origin of the term

Petisero (from "petiso" — Argentine slang for "small horse" or "stocky") is the Argentine term for a polo groom. It reflects the deep Argentine tradition in polo and the specific role of caring for polo ponies (petises).

    What a petisero does

The daily care of polo ponies — feeding, mucking out, grooming, exercising, tacking up for play, applying polo bandages, and monitoring health. Match-day duties include tacking up multiple ponies and making rapid changes between chukkas.

    Relationship with the patron

At high-goal Argentine polo, the petisero typically works directly for the patron (team owner) or professional player. The relationship is close — the petisero knows each pony's character, quirks, and readiness intimately.

    Equestrian background

Most Argentine petiseros grow up with horses and often have polo experience themselves. Many can play polo at a basic level and exercise horses at polo pace — which is valuable for the ponies' conditioning.

    Status in polo culture

The petisero is a respected and essential role in Argentine polo culture. An experienced, skilled petisero is highly sought after and often follows high-goal teams internationally.

    Seasonal Work Pattern

Experienced petiseros follow the international polo calendar, working different seasons in different countries. This international lifestyle is a defining characteristic of the role at elite level.

    Season 1

    Argentine Open Season (Oct–Dec)

Buenos Aires, Palermo, and Buenos Aires Province

Highest demand. Major tournaments including the Argentine Open require large strings of ponies with multiple petiseros per team. Peak earnings period.

    Season 2

    Argentine Low Season (Jan–Apr approx.)

    Argentina (reduced activity)

Lower intensity. Some petiseros travel internationally during this period.

    Season 3

    UK Season (May–Sep)

England, primarily Guards Polo Club, Cowdray, and county clubs

Argentine players and teams travel to England with their petiseros. Work intensity increases through June–August.

    Season 4

    Florida / Wellington Season (Jan–Apr)

    Wellington, Florida, USA

World's largest polo venue. Many Argentine petiseros are employed by teams playing the US high-goal season.

    Season 5

    Other international venues

    Dubai, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia

Argentine petiseros follow elite teams globally. Growing polo markets in the Middle East and Asia offer new employment opportunities.

    Finding Petisero Work

Petisero work is found through a combination of formal listings and informal polo community networks.

Direct contact with Argentine polo estancias

Many Argentine estancias (polo farms) produce and train polo ponies and employ petiseros year-round. Approaching estancias directly is the most traditional route.

    Professional player networks

High-goal Argentine players often bring their own petiseros internationally. Building a reputation in Argentine polo through yard work and connections is the primary route to travelling petisero roles.
